However, because these systems rely on incredibly tight tolerances and sensitive solenoid valves, they are far more susceptible to damage from contaminated brake fluid than older systems. One of the most immediate symptoms of contaminated brake fluid is a "spongy" or soft brake pedal. Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it naturally absorbs moisture from the atmosphere over time. In an EHB system, this water content can boil under the intense heat generated by the high-pressure pump and frequent actuator cycles. When water turns into steam, it creates air pockets within the lines. Since air is compressible and liquid is not, the pedal feel becomes inconsistent. In an electro-hydraulic system, this debris can clog the tiny orifices within the ABS modulator and the electronic valves that control brake pressure.
